Blockchain Protocols Gear Up Against Quantum Threat

As the threat of quantum computers grows, blockchain protocols are racing against time to prepare for potential attacks. Researchers warn that these powerful machines could break cryptography, allowing hackers to steal funds from compromised wallets.

The challenge lies in verifying ownership on the blockchain, as current solutions focus on preventing attacks rather than mitigating their consequences. 'We won't be able to tell if someone running a transaction is the rightful owner of the asset or not,' said Anton Astafiev, CTO at Near One, developer of the layer-1 NEAR Protocol.

Astafiev suggests that zero-knowledge proof technology could enable the rightful owner to demonstrate knowledge of the original seed phrase without revealing sensitive information. This is just one example of how research across blockchain ecosystems is essential in preparing for quantum unknowns.
