Dartmouth College's $14 Million Crypto ETF Investment
Dartmouth College's $14 million investment in cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has made headlines, with the university's endowment taking a measured but tangible step into the digital asset market. This move is significant, as it marks one of the first times an Ivy League institution has invested directly in crypto ETFs.
The endowment holds approximately $7.7 million in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), $3.5 million in Grayscale Ethereum Staking ETF, and $3.3 million in Bitwise Solana Staking ETF. This investment is relatively small compared to the total endowment, which was valued at around $8 billion as of the last fiscal year.
The choice of funds highlights a strategic, diversified approach by the university's investment office. By investing in staking ETFs, which generate yield by locking up tokens to secure a network, Dartmouth is evaluating a wider range of blockchain protocols beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. This could encourage other endowments and institutional investors to follow suit, potentially driving further capital into the regulated crypto ETF market.
