Kenya Integrates Bitcoin Lightning Network with M-Pesa

The recent integration of the Bitcoin Lightning Network into Kenya's M-Pesa mobile money network is a significant development for cryptocurrency enthusiasts and users alike. Tando, a mobile payments app available on Google Play and Apple's App Store, has enabled users worldwide to send Bitcoin directly to Kenyan phone numbers, which can then be accessed in Kenyan shillings via M-Pesa without the need for a crypto wallet or Know Your Customer (KYC) verification.

This integration targets remittances, freelancer payments, and merchant transfers, aiming to tap into the massive user base of M-Pesa. With over 32 million active users and transactions valued at KES 40.2 trillion ($312 billion) in the past year, this move could potentially establish Kenya as a key hub for Bitcoin-Lightning adoption in East Africa.

According to Tando's co-founder Gitau, the app does not control user funds, instead serving as a 'bridge facilitating value transfer.' This non-custodial architecture distinguishes it from previous Bitcoin-to-mobile-money services like BitPesa. Independent reviews of the beta release indicate that there are no additional fees for users beyond standard M-Pesa tariffs, although Tando absorbs costs during the adoption phase.

However, reviewers noted two UX gaps: the app does not display the recipient's name before confirmation, an important fraud-prevention step; and currently supports only Kenyan shillings, limiting usability for international senders. The success of this integration hinges on maintaining adequate Lightning liquidity, particularly during peak remittance times.
