A recent case highlights the growing threat of real-world crimes targeting cryptocurrency holders. A multi-year operation, active between late 2023 and early 2025, was uncovered by federal investigators.
The group carried out various types of attacks, including database hacks, phone scams, money laundering, and residential burglaries, to steal cryptocurrency from its victims.
Prosecutors said that the individual, who used the alias 'GothFerrari,' was brought in when online crypto scams failed to access victims' funds, which were stored in hardware wallets. They allegedly stole over $250 million from their victims.
