Marathon Digital Expands into AI and High-Performance Computing Infrastructure
Marathon Digital, a leading player in the energy and data center sector, has announced its plans to expand into artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing infrastructure. The company's Chairman and CEO, Fred Thiel, revealed that this strategic shift is part of a long-term strategy aimed at leveraging Marathon Digital's existing assets and expertise.
The expansion builds on the firm's experience in aggregating low-cost power and data center capacity for bitcoin mining. According to Thiel, the company's initial approach focused on delivering compute services to hosted bitcoin mining sites rather than owning the underlying infrastructure. However, with the stress experienced within the bitcoin mining sector in 2023, Marathon Digital seized opportunities to acquire land, power, and data center assets at replacement costs.
The company has already begun to diversify its energy sources by incorporating wind farms and flare gas utilization in oil fields. Additionally, it has signed a 250-megawatt agreement with the United Arab Emirates for two data centers equipped with advanced immersion liquid cooling technologies that eliminate the need for air conditioning.
