Myanmar Introduces Harsh Penalties for Violent Cyber Fraud Operators

The Myanmar government has introduced a new law aimed at cracking down on online scams, which have been linked to romance fraud, cryptocurrency schemes, and regional trafficking networks.

The Anti-Online Scam Bill proposes the death penalty for violent cyber fraud operators, as well as life imprisonment for those running scam centers. The bill also covers digital currency fraud and includes harsher penalties when operators use violence or torture to force victims into scams.

The proposal is part of a growing regional effort to combat online scams, with neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Singapore expanding their own cybercrime crackdowns.
