The cryptocurrency market continues to attract investors seeking direct exposure to Bitcoin. Two popular spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF and the VanEck Bitcoin ETF, offer unique investment opportunities with varying cost structures.
The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF has a significantly larger asset base, managing over $56.9 billion in assets, compared to the VanEck Bitcoin ETF's $1.2 billion. However, this comes at a higher expense ratio of 0.25% for the iShares fund, whereas the VanEck fund charges an expense ratio of 0.20%. It is worth noting that the VanEck fund currently benefits from its sponsor waiving the entire sponsor fee until July 31, 2026, contingent on the fund's assets remaining below a certain threshold.
Investors may consider the VanEck Bitcoin ETF for long-term holding strategies due to its ongoing cost advantage. On the other hand, the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF's larger asset base could provide greater liquidity for frequent traders. The performance of both funds over the trailing one-year period ending April 10, 2026, showed a slightly smaller decline in total return for the VanEck fund.
