Vitalik Buterin Sets New Standard for Layer-2 Solutions on Ethereum

Ethereum's Layer-2 (L2) landscape is set to undergo a significant transformation, with co-founder Vitalik Buterin advocating for more specialized solutions that address specific application needs.

During his recent appearance at the Hong Kong Web3 Festival, Buterin emphasized the need for L2s to start with real-world applications and identify which functions can be performed off-chain. He noted that merely scaling up Ethereum and introducing more centralization is 'meaningless' and does not add significant value.

Buterin pointed to ENS (Ethereum Name Service) and privacy-oriented applications as examples of how specific infrastructure can be built around concrete application demands, rather than launching generic replicas. This approach prioritizes specialization and clearer architectural intent over standardization and ecosystem familiarity.
