The decision follows a review of the current system, led by former Home Office permanent secretary Philip Rycroft. The review highlighted concerns over illicit finance and the vulnerability of the UK's political system to external influence.
Rycroft emphasized that the measures are not intended to alarm, but rather to raise awareness about potential threats to the country's democratic processes. He noted that hostile states have made explicit threats to exert influence through financial means, while even allies have floated ideas about injecting money into British politics.
