Wall Street is embracing tokenized stocks, but it's doing so in a way that keeps traditional gatekeepers firmly in place. The market cap of tokenized equities has exploded from under $30 million in early 2025 to roughly $1.2 billion by the end of that year, a 40x increase that caught every major trading desk in Manhattan.
The regulatory green light is forming with the SEC preparing an 'innovation exemption' framework for release around May 18-19, 2026. This would allow crypto platforms more flexible trading practices for tokenized securities, creating a legal on-ramp for assets that have until now existed mostly in offshore markets.
The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation is also moving forward with its plans to begin limited production trades of tokenized assets starting July 2026, with a broader rollout expected by October. Major players like BlackRock, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs are involved in this initial DTCC rollout.
