Miami Man 'Bitcoin Rodney' Pleads Guilty in $1.8 Billion Crypto Scam

A Florida man named Rodney 'Bitcoin Rodney' Burton has pleaded guilty in federal court for his role in a massive cryptocurrency fraud scheme.

The scam, which took place from June 2020 to January 2022, involved the promotion of HyperFund, a supposedly legitimate investment platform that promised investors unusually high returns.

Burton, who also has a residence in Prince George's County, Maryland, controlled several companies that offered consulting services but were actually unlicensed money transmitting businesses.

He personally received at least $7.8 million in proceeds from the operation of these businesses, including from investors located in Maryland.
