Tether Puts $20M into Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin for On-Chain Infrastructure Boost
Tether has invested $20 million in Mercado Bitcoin, a Brazilian digital financial platform, to accelerate its on-chain infrastructure development. The investment aims to expand payments, tokenized investment products, and credit services for the platform's over 4.5 million users.
The deal marks Tether's strategic pivot towards real-world applications of stablecoins, rather than just circulating liquidity. This approach is consistent with Tether's regional investment strategy, which includes backing Parfin and Orionx, as well as supporting remittance platform LemFi.
As Latin America emerges as a testing ground for institutional-grade blockchain adoption, Brazil has fostered a favorable environment through progressive regulatory frameworks and successful local payment innovations. Mercado Bitcoin represents the type of regulated, scalable infrastructure that Tether requires to broaden the utility of its stablecoin ecosystem.
