Cryptocurrency Scams Soar to Record Highs, FBI Reports
The FBI's latest report on cybercrime highlights a growing trend in cryptocurrency-related scams. According to the agency's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), 1,008,597 complaints were filed across all cybercrime categories in 2025, with cryptocurrency cases accounting for over half of the reported losses.
Of these, $11.366 billion was lost to various types of scams, including investment schemes, tech support scams, and government impersonation. Investment scams drove the majority of crypto-related losses, generating $7.2 billion in reported losses.
The report also notes that cryptocurrency was widely used across multiple fraud categories, with 72% of investment fraud transactions and 40% of government impersonation scams involving digital assets.
