New York Slams Brakes on Hyperscale Data Centers Amid Energy Concerns

New York has imposed a one-year moratorium on new large-scale data centers in the state, making it the first US state to do so. The moratorium targets facilities consuming 50 megawatts or more of electricity, roughly enough to power about 40,000 homes. This move is aimed at hyperscale buildouts by companies like Microsoft and Google for AI workloads.

The executive order signed by Governor Kathy Hochul halts the state permitting process for hyperscale data centers and mandates regulatory studies on their environmental and economic impacts. The moratorium follows a similar restriction imposed in 2022 on certain types of proof-of-work crypto mining operations that relied on carbon-based power plants.

Similar concerns about surging electricity demand, water consumption, land use, and environmental degradation drove the legislation as they did with crypto mining restrictions. New York's administration has committed to assessing both the environmental toll and the economic ripple effects throughout the moratorium period.
