The US Treasury has taken swift action against North Korea's crypto-funded IT worker fraud scheme, sanctioning six individuals and two entities in a move that highlights the country's efforts to fund its weapons programs through illicit activities.

According to reports, the sanctioned individuals used stolen identities and fake documentation to land jobs at real companies, including US firms, and funneled their earnings towards DPRK weapons programs. The scheme is estimated to have generated nearly $800 million in 2024 alone, with funds being converted into crypto through various means.

The sanctions also target two entities: Amnokgang Technology Development Company, a DPRK firm that manages overseas IT worker delegations and other procurement activities, and Quangvietdnbg International Services Company Limited, a Vietnamese company that handled currency conversions for the scheme.
