Canada Cracks Down on Cryptocurrency Donations to Political Campaigns
The Canadian government has taken steps to address potential vulnerabilities in its electoral finance system by introducing a bill to ban cryptocurrency donations to political campaigns.
Bill C-25, also known as the Strong and Free Elections Act, would prohibit contributions made in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, as well as other forms of untraceable funding. The move is aimed at reducing the risk of money laundering and ensuring transparency in electoral financing.
The bill builds on recommendations from Canada's Chief Electoral Officer, who has expressed concerns about the pseudo-anonymity of cryptocurrency transactions and the difficulty of identifying contributors.
