Crypto Exploit: $5.1M Laundered Through Tornado Cash
A recent cryptocurrency exploit has led to significant financial losses for Jaredfromsubway.eth's Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) bot. According to on-chain investigator Specter, the attacker who stole $7.5 million has now laundered approximately $5.1 million through Tornado Cash.
The funds were transferred in 20 different transactions, each worth 100 Ethereum (ETH), totaling 2,000 ETH. To mitigate exposure to price volatility and ease future transfers, the remaining 1,422 ETH was exchanged for roughly $2.44 million worth of DAI, a dollar-pegged stablecoin.
The attack, which involved imitating a lucrative opportunity and altering the trading logic of the MEV bot, resulted in the theft of 1,583 ETH, $2.87 million in USDC, and $2.09 million in USDT. The attacker then combined these assets and exchanged them for 4,427 ETH.
This post-exploit behavior is typical, with stolen funds being quickly split up and exchanged across multiple blockchains to complicate recovery and tracing.
