US Dominates Bitcoin Adoption as Bank of America Embraces Digital Assets

Bank of America's recent decision to reorganize its leadership around digital assets has highlighted a broader trend across the United States. The country already leads the world in nearly every measure of Bitcoin adoption, according to data from River.

Americans hold an estimated 42% of all Bitcoin in circulation, and roughly 49.6 million American adults now own Bitcoin, accounting for around 18.6% of the adult population. This is more than the number of Americans who own gold.

The US also dominates Bitcoin mining, with a global hashrate of 37.5%, supported by over 150 domestic companies and over 50 mining sites each drawing more than 10 megawatts of power. Many of these operations buy surplus electricity that would otherwise go unused, giving them a secondary role in balancing the country's electrical infrastructure.

US public companies hold a significant portion of all Bitcoin held by public companies worldwide, with 1.24 million BTC, accounting for 92.7% of the total. In the past 12 months, these companies added 510,000 BTC to their holdings, a pace more than three times faster than the total supply of Bitcoin mined over that same period.

The US government also holds a substantial amount of Bitcoin, with 328,372 BTC in its reserves, nearly three times as much as every other government on Earth combined. According to Stand with Crypto, a majority of politicians across both parties in Washington now hold pro-Bitcoin positions.
