Court Denies Appeal for Bitcoin Mine in Rocky View County
A court decision has upheld the denial of an appeal by Persist Oil and Gas to operate a bitcoin mine in Rocky View County, Alberta.
The company had argued that the mining operation was permitted under a surface rights lease, which was initially executed in 1999. However, the lease expired in 2020, and the company failed to obtain necessary municipal development permits from Rocky View County.
According to court documents, Persist Oil and Gas claimed that bitcoin mining was within the scope of the lease, as it involved extracting natural gas to power data processors. However, a chambers judge previously ruled against them, granting a permanent injunction to stop the operation.
