Zilliqa Exchange Partner Suffers Cold Wallet Breach, ZIL Deposits Frozen
Zilliqa has reported that an exchange partner's cold wallet was breached, resulting in the unauthorized removal of ZIL tokens. The exact amount stolen and the identity of the affected exchange remain unknown. Zilliqa quickly responded by notifying all exchanges to temporarily suspend ZIL deposits and withdrawals.
The project emphasized that its own blockchain and protocol were not compromised, but rather a custodial failure at a third-party exchange. Cold storage hacks are rare, but when they occur, human error is often the culprit. In this case, it's likely that an insider threat or social engineering attack led to the breach.
Zilliqa launched in 2017 and was among the first blockchain platforms to implement sharding technology. The immediate impact of the hack is practical: traders who hold ZIL on an exchange are currently unable to move their tokens due to the deposit and withdrawal freeze.
