CJNG Leader El Mencho's Death Highlights Cartel's Cryptocurrency Use

Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, led one of the most powerful and violent drug cartels in Mexico. His death has significant implications for the country's fight against organized crime.

The Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel, under El Mencho's leadership, developed extensive trafficking operations in cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. The US Department of State designated CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in February 2025.

Law enforcement agencies have identified cases where Mexican cartels used cryptocurrency for money laundering and cross-border transactions. A notable example is the use of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Monero (XMR), and Tether (USDT) to move illicit funds.
