Pollak Steps Back from Coinbase's Base App After Social Crypto Bet Goes Wrong
Jesse Pollak, the creator of Coinbase's Base network, announced on July 15, 2026, that he is stepping back from leading the app. He handed over daily control to Jordan Fish, also known as Cobie.
Pollak admitted his two-year bet on onchain social apps and creator coins was wrong. He said the entire social side of the market, including Farcaster, Zora, miniapps, and creator coins, 'disintegrated completely' in the first quarter of 2026, calling it a 'punch in the face' for Base.
Pollak stated that prediction markets, perpetuals, and stablecoins emerged as the strongest drivers of adoption instead. He said Base will prioritize trading, payments, and AI agents for the rest of 2026 as he recasts it as 'the blockchain for global finance.'
