Base Launches MCP Gateway for Secure AI-Driven Crypto Interactions

Base has made significant strides in its Ethereum Layer-2 network with the launch of Base MCP on May 26. This gateway enables AI agents to connect directly with users' smart wallets, facilitating on-chain actions such as token swaps, portfolio tracking, and DeFi interactions.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, forms the basis of this system. The MCP framework allows for standardized plug-in systems that enable AI agents to interact with users' smart wallets securely.

One of the key benefits of Base MCP is its non-custodial design, which ensures the MCP server never accesses users' private keys. Authentication is handled through OAuth 2.1, a security protocol widely used in traditional web applications. This approach reduces phishing risks by localizing agent call construction within the MCP framework.

Base MCP has secured partnerships with several prominent DeFi protocols, including Uniswap for token swaps, Morpho and Moonwell for lending, Aerodrome for liquidity infrastructure, Bankr and Avantis for portfolio management and perpetual trading respectively. Virtuals is also a launch partner, providing AI agent tokenization capabilities.

The integration of Base MCP with popular AI clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor means users can now interact with their crypto portfolios using plain language prompts, streamlining the experience and reducing friction.
