Coinbase Registers AI Investment Advisor Under SEC Oversight
Coinbase has made a significant move in the financial industry by registering an AI agent as an SEC-licensed investment advisor. This AI agent, part of Coinbase Advisor, is one of the first tools of its kind to operate under formal regulatory oversight.
The product, launched in beta in mid-June 2026, lives inside the Coinbase app and delivers personalized portfolio recommendations, market insights, and execution guidance tailored to each user's investment goals, risk tolerance, and current holdings. It is non-discretionary, meaning users must explicitly approve any trades before execution.
Coinbase Advisor focuses on spot crypto assets, USDC lending, and Dollar Cost Averaging strategies for now, but the company has signaled plans to expand its coverage into equities and derivatives. The entity behind the service, Coinbase Advisors, LLC, holds dual registrations: as a Registered Investment Advisor with the SEC and as a Commodity Trading Advisor with the CFTC and NFA.
