US Power Grid Faces Shortage as AI Infrastructure Demand Surges

The US power grid is facing a significant shortage of electric capacity to support the growing demand for AI infrastructure. According to industry estimates, the grid needs an additional 50+ gigawatts of capacity by 2028, with a large portion of that demand concentrated in Texas.

The company has signed two major contracts and is targeting energization for October 2026. Cipher's backlog dwarfs its current revenue, and the stock has seen significant growth in recent months.

IREN (NASDAQ:IREN) operates pre-powered data center campuses with secured transmission connectivity, positioning it to deploy AI infrastructure years ahead of competitors. The company's CEO warned that utilities may take 18-24 months simply to determine whether a site has available power capacity, making pre-secured power access a critical competitive advantage.
