Home Invasions Dominate Crypto Wrench Attacks as Financial Exposure Soars

Crypto wrench attacks surged in the first half of 2026, with home invasions becoming the most common type of attack, according to blockchain security firm CertiK. The company reported a 33.3% increase in verified incidents, rising from 39 in H1 2025 to 52 in H1 2026.

The number of publicly reported home invasions rose to 20, up from just one the previous year, while kidnappings increased to 16 from 12. In contrast, robberies declined significantly, dropping from five incidents to one.

CertiK noted that the recorded financial exposure linked to these attacks reached approximately $124.1 million, a substantial increase from the $10.5 million reported in H1 2025. This figure includes not only confirmed thefts but also ransom demands, victim transfers, frozen or recovered assets, and failed ransom demands.

The rise in home invasions suggests that criminals are increasingly bypassing digital safeguards by physically coercing crypto holders and their families, challenging conventional self-custody advice. CertiK recommended implementing multisignature or multiparty computation arrangements to mitigate this risk.
