Farage Steps Down Amid Crypto Scandals: By-Election Looms in Clacton
Nigel Farage has announced his resignation as an MP, triggering a by-election in Clacton-on-Sea. The Reform UK leader claims he's stepping down due to unfair media scrutiny and that the parliamentary body is being used as a 'political tool.' However, The Times had revealed that Farage failed to declare financial support from George Cottrell, his long-term aide with a history of high-stakes gambling.
Cottrell was involved in various crypto-linked scandals, including helping Reform UK hire staff and organizing security for Farage. He also played a role in Tether.bet, an offshore crypto gambling firm modeled after USDT (Tether's stablecoin).
Farage is facing scrutiny over his ties to crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, who gave him a secret £5 million 'gift' before the 2024 UK general election. The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner launched a probe into whether this gift breached any rules.
