Balance Coin Crushed by $915K Exploit as Algorithmic Stablecoin Value Plummets
Balance Coin (BLC), an algorithmic stablecoin powering the Balance Protocol ecosystem, has suffered a catastrophic loss of over 99% in value after being hit by a reported exploit.
The attack is linked to a manipulation of the oracle price of Binance Bitcoin (BTCB), which allowed an attacker to liquidate several BTCB vaults that didn't meet the liquidation conditions. This exploitation led to a sharp increase in the supply of BLC tokens, filling the liquidity pools and putting immense selling pressure on the stablecoin.
The incident has resulted in approximately $915,000 in losses for users and has raised fresh concerns about the security of decentralized finance (DeFi) stablecoin systems and oracle-based lending mechanisms. The event also highlights the vulnerabilities of algorithmic stablecoins that rely on protocol mechanisms rather than traditional reserve-backed assets.
The security researchers have identified suspicious transactions related to the exploit, which involved minting large quantities of BLC tokens from a null address and exchanging them for other assets on decentralized exchanges.
