Moscow Court Sentences Former Binance Director to Five-Year Prison Term
A Moscow court has handed down a significant sentence to a former executive of Binance, the leading cryptocurrency exchange.
Vladimir Smerkis, who led Binance's operations in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States from 2022 until his departure in September 2023, has been found guilty of large-scale fraud under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code.
The case centers around an alleged agreement between Smerkis and Oleg Polunin, a crypto blogger and trader. Polunin paid approximately $110,000 for advertising services aimed at increasing his user reach. However, prosecutors claim that these services were never delivered, with the funds instead being spent on personal expenses.
The court's decision reflects the prosecution's argument that Smerkis pocketed the funds and used them for his own benefit.
