$263M Crypto Theft: California Man Sentenced to Prison for Lavish Lifestyle
A California man has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a cryptocurrency theft scheme that resulted in over $263 million being stolen.
The individual, identified as Evan Tangeman, used an elaborate social engineering scheme to steal the funds, which were then laundered through various means. He converted the cryptocurrency into fiat cash and worked with real estate agents to rent luxury homes for tens of thousands of dollars per month.
Tangeman's role in the scheme was that of a money launderer, and he benefited directly from the thefts by receiving luxury cars as compensation for his work.
