XRP Holders Losing Big in Sophisticated Phishing Scam

A phishing campaign targeting XRP holders has resulted in significant financial losses for some investors. The scammers use fake non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to trick users into authorizing malicious transactions, often with promises of 'Ripple Payout Tokens' or other enticing rewards.

According to an alert from Bithomp, a single user lost $15,000 in this way. The scammers exploit the low transaction fees on the XRP Ledger to mint hundreds of fake NFTs every day, which are then distributed to active XRPL wallets or promoted on social media platforms.

The scam involves highly official-sounding terminology and urgency, prompting users to sign transactions that ultimately drain their balances. The FBI reported last year that cryptocurrency-related fraud accounted for the most reported losses among all scam categories, with Americans losing over $11.3 billion in 2025 alone.
