SEC’s ‘Crypto Mom’ Leaves Commission for Academic Role

Hester Peirce, a prominent figure in US cryptocurrency regulation, is departing from her role as a commissioner at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). She will join Regent University School of Law as an associate professor in November, bringing expertise in federal litigation, securities regulation, and digital assets to the institution.

Peirce's term at the SEC officially expired in June 2025, but she may continue to serve for approximately 18 months if not replaced beforehand. During her tenure, the agency's approach to crypto regulation and enforcement underwent significant changes under President Trump's leadership.

The move is seen as a shift in Peirce's career, as she transitions from regulating cryptocurrencies to teaching and researching related topics at Regent University School of Law.
