Ethereum's Disappointing Performance Compared to Bitcoin
Ethereum's decline in value has been more pronounced compared to its peer, Bitcoin, in recent months. The ETH/BTC ratio, which measures ether's value against bitcoin directly, has fallen to a 10-month low near 0.0283, indicating Ethereum is bleeding value faster than Bitcoin.
Analysts attribute Ethereum's underperformance to several factors, including its higher beta, weaker ETF market, whale selling, and growing competition from rival blockchains. The ETH/BTC ratio has been in a long-term downtrend since the launch of US spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, which provided a structural source of demand for Bitcoin that Ethereum lacked.
A sustained turn upward in the ETH/BTC ratio would be a sign that Ethereum's underperformance is reversing. The accumulation pace of Ethereum treasury companies could also provide support to the asset's price. However, the near-term outlook remains uncertain, and Ethereum's higher beta means it will likely continue to fall harder than Bitcoin until market conditions stabilize.
