Fan Tokens Surge as Spain and Belgium Dominate World Cup
The FIFA World Cup has become a catalyst for fan tokens to surge in value as crypto enthusiasts flock to support their favorite teams. Spain and Belgium's impressive performances in the tournament have seen their respective fan tokens, SNFT and BELG, experience significant gains.
SNFT, the token tied to Spain's National Football Team, surged 54% over the week leading up to July 6, with a 17% jump in a single day alone. Belgium's fan token, BELG, followed suit, climbing roughly 16% over the same stretch.
Fan tokens have been around for years, mostly as curiosities issued through Socios.com, which is powered by the Chiliz blockchain. They grant holders voting rights on minor club decisions and access to NFT-related perks. However, their value is highly volatile and can drop quickly when a team gets eliminated.
The 2026 World Cup is the first tournament to feature an official crypto exchange sponsor, with Kraken securing the designation as FIFA's first official crypto exchange partner in June. This deal brings blockchain branding into stadiums across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
