US Seizes Nearly $1 Billion in Iranian Crypto Assets
The US Treasury Department has announced a significant crackdown on Iranian cryptocurrency assets, seizing nearly $1 billion worth of digital funds. This move is part of the Trump administration's 'Operation Economic Fury', which targets Iranian financial networks across multiple fronts.
Speaking at the Reagan National Economic Forum, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the US has 'outright grabbed the wallets' of Iranian crypto holders, freezing approximately $1 billion in assets. This figure is significantly higher than previous disclosures, with a notable increase in recent weeks.
The seizures are aimed at restricting Tehran's access to capital and financing government activities. According to Bessent, the campaign has weakened Iran's finances, disrupting revenue streams previously valued between $400 million and $500 million per month. The Treasury Secretary also highlighted worsening economic conditions inside Iran, including inflation that may have surpassed 200%.
