Canadians Overwhelmingly Support Government's Proposed Ban on Crypto ATMs

A recent poll conducted by Research Co. found that over half of Canadians (56%) support the government's proposed ban on digital asset automated teller machines (ATMs), which would prevent customers from depositing cash and converting it into cryptocurrencies like BTC.

The survey, conducted among a representative sample of 1,002 adults in Canada from May 12-14, 2026, also revealed that only 26% of Canadians oppose the ban, while 18% are unsure.

The proposed ban is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney's Spring economic budget update, which aims to combat financial crime. The government has stated that digital asset ATMs are a primary method for scammers to defraud victims and for criminals to place their cash proceeds of crime.

According to the survey, support for the ban is highest among Canadians aged 55 and over (62%), as well as those who voted for Prime Minister Carney's Liberal Party in the last federal election (64%).
