Altcoin Season Chatter Surges, But One Chart Warns of Unsustainable Rally

Altcoin season is a term used to describe a period of time when smaller cryptocurrencies experience significant price increases, often at the expense of Bitcoin. Recently, social media chatter about altcoin season has surged to its highest level in three months.

A chart from Santiment shows that mentions of 'altcoinseason' and 'altseason' have been climbing since early May. This increase in chatter suggests that retail investors are becoming more interested in smaller cryptocurrencies.

However, one chart is flashing a warning sign. The OTHERS/BTC ratio, which tracks the total altcoin market cap excluding the top 10 coins relative to Bitcoin, has started to recover. However, the ETH/BTC ratio remains weak, which breaks the standard rotation playbook. In a healthy rotation, Ethereum typically leads altcoins higher before capital flows down the risk curve into smaller tokens.

The divergence between the OTHERS/BTC and ETH/BTC ratios suggests that alts may be front-running a potential rotation, skipping the usual ETH leadership phase. A healthy rotation usually starts with ETH reclaiming relative strength against Bitcoin.
