Vitalik Buterin Unveils Lean Ethereum Roadmap for Significant Network Overhaul
Ethereum's 'Lean Ethereum' roadmap outlines significant changes to the protocol. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled the plan on July 4, 2026, which aims to restructure nearly every major component of the network over a 3-to-4-year period.
The core features of Lean Ethereum include native recursive STARK verification, post-quantum cryptography, and ZK-unlinkable staking. STARKs are a type of zero-knowledge proof that enable one party to prove a computation is correct without revealing the underlying data.
Buterin emphasized the significance of Lean Ethereum, stating that it represents the 'third major iteration' of the network, similar to The Merge in 2022. Unlike The Merge, which was a single cutover from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, Lean Ethereum will roll out gradually through a series of sequential upgrades.
The upgrade timeline is already underway, with Pectra shipped in May 2025 and Fusaka following in December 2025. Glamsterdam landed in the first half of 2026, and Hegota is targeted for the second half of this year.
