FTX's Fallen King Sam Bankman-Fried Denied Appeal, 25-Year Prison Sentence Stands
Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of FTX and cryptocurrency entrepreneur, has lost his appeal against a 25-year prison sentence. A panel of three judges upheld the conviction for fraud, citing that the embezzlement of client assets was a classic case of financial deceit.
The collapse of FTX in 2022 sparked widespread outrage in the crypto community, with many investors left reeling from significant losses. Bankman-Fried's defense team argued that while FTX may have been insolvent, it was not fundamentally unsound, and that a billion-dollar hole in its coffers was merely a liquidity crisis.
The appellate court judges ruled that this argument was irrelevant, as the fraud had already occurred at the time of the transfer to Alameda Research. Bankman-Fried can now request a review by the full court or take his case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
