Canada Proposes Ban on Cryptocurrency Donations to Political Campaigns

The Canadian government has taken steps to strengthen election finance laws by proposing a ban on cryptocurrency donations to political campaigns.

Bill C-25, also known as the Strong and Free Elections Act, was introduced to the House of Commons on March 26. The bill aims to eliminate potential vulnerabilities in electoral financing by prohibiting contributions made in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and others.

The move follows warnings from Canada's Chief Electoral Officer about the risks associated with crypto donations. Despite allowing such donations since 2019, no major federal party has publicly accepted them, and none have been reported in recent elections.
