Canada Tightens Electoral Finances with Cryptocurrency Ban
The Canadian government is taking a significant step towards regulating the role of cryptocurrency in election financing.
Billed as a move to prevent untraceable foreign funding, the bill, part of the Canada Elections Act, targets cryptocurrency donations made to political parties and campaigns. The legislation prohibits contributions in the form of digital assets, including money orders and prepaid payment products, due to concerns over traceability.
The ban would apply across the entire Canadian electoral system, impacting registered parties, associations, candidates, leadership campaigns, and third-party groups.
