Hong Kong Retiree Loses Over $840,000 in Triple Crypto Scam
A 66-year-old Hong Kong retiree has fallen victim to a triple crypto investment scam, resulting in the loss of over $840,000.
The victim was first approached by a scammer who claimed to be a 'virtual currency investment expert' and promised steady gains if the victim followed their advice. The retiree transferred $180,000 and deposited crypto into a wallet controlled by the scammer, only to watch them disappear.
Unwilling to accept the loss, the victim later searched online for another 'crypto expert' who claimed they could help recover the missing funds. However, this expert also demanded money and disappeared with it.
The third and final scam involved a supposed specialist who messaged the retiree on WhatsApp offering to reclaim both prior losses if the victim bought $585,000 in crypto and sent it to a specified address. Once again, the scammer disappeared with the money.
The case highlights the importance of being cautious when approached by strangers claiming to be experts in cryptocurrency investment. Genuine professionals do not rely on random outreach or promise guaranteed returns.
