Bitcoin Mined Empty Block at Height 954,352 Amid Rare Event
A rare event has occurred in the Bitcoin network, as an empty block was mined at height 954,352. According to Mempool data, the block contained only the coinbase transaction and no user transactions.
The block was mined by SpiderPool, and the timestamp showed a 62-second gap between the previous block. This short block gap has drawn attention from traders and network watchers, who flagged it as a potential issue.
However, empty Bitcoin blocks are not new and have appeared throughout the cryptocurrency's history. In fact, Mempool Research noted in June 2024 that empty blocks are now rare events.
The research suggests that mining pools may send empty templates to save time and resources, but this strategy comes with a tradeoff: giving up transaction fees from that block. Repeated behavior would raise questions about miner timing choices and whether some pools prioritize speed over fee revenue.
