Argentina Cracks Down on Crypto-Related Fraud with Operation Fake Coins

Authorities in Argentina have launched a significant crackdown on cryptocurrency-related fraud, marking one of the country's largest enforcement actions in this sector. Operation Fake Coins saw 90 simultaneous raids across the nation, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals and the seizure of over $8 million in USDT.

The investigation focused on sophisticated networks that utilized WhatsApp messages to lure victims into investing in what appeared to be legitimate opportunities. However, upon closer inspection, these platforms were found to be fake investment schemes.

According to investigators, unregistered financial advisers reached out to potential investors through WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business accounts, promoting high-return investments. Once funds were handed over, the money was converted into USDT through Binance's peer-to-peer marketplace before being transferred abroad, including to Venezuela.

The operation has been characterized as surpassing the 2024 RainbowEx case in terms of its scope and significance. The sheer scale of the bust saw authorities seize nearly ARS 60 million in cash and confiscate over 80 electronic devices, further highlighting the complexity of the networks involved.
