Ethereum Consensus Upgrade: Minimmit Promises Faster and Safer Network
Ethereum's developers are considering a significant upgrade to its consensus mechanism, Casper FFG. The proposed change would replace it with Minimmit, a new finality gadget designed to streamline block finalization while maintaining network security and resilience.
Under the current system, validators must sign twice to justify and finalize blocks. In contrast, Minimmit would require only one signature, reducing the margin of security from 33% to around 17%. However, proponents argue that this reduced threshold still provides sufficient economic disincentives for attackers.
The main objective of Minimmit is to prioritize censorship resistance over finality reversal. In the event of an attack or software bug, the network would pause finalization, giving developers and validators time to act. This approach aims to prevent irreversible damage to the blockchain.
