Zcash Cryptocurrency Plummets After Discovery of Critical Security Flaw

The Zcash cryptocurrency has experienced a significant market downturn after a critical security flaw was revealed in its Orchard shielded pool infrastructure.

The vulnerability, which had been present since May 2022, allowed for the potential creation of unlimited counterfeit tokens without detection. The issue was discovered by Taylor Hornby, a security specialist who used Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 AI to identify the weakness in the protocol.

A hard fork emergency patch was implemented on June 3, 2026, but no cryptographic method exists to verify whether the vulnerability was exploited during the four-year period before remediation.
