Franklin Templeton Expands Crypto Presence with Acquisition
Franklin Templeton is making a significant move into the cryptocurrency space by acquiring 250 Digital, a crypto investment firm spun out from CoinFund. The acquisition is expected to close in Q2 2026 and will bring traditional finance power to cryptocurrency strategies. This deal marks one of the first times tokenized assets play a key role in a merger and acquisition (M&A) deal.
The use of Franklin Templeton's tokenized money market fund, known as BENJI Token, is a key aspect of this deal. Tokenization turns real-world assets into digital tokens on a blockchain, allowing for instant settlement, transparency, and programmability. This innovation has the potential to reshape corporate finance by enabling faster closes, lower costs, and built-in liquidity.
The acquisition will bring top talent and proven strategies under Franklin Templeton's roof. Christopher Perkins, with 13 years of experience from Citi, will head the new division, while Seth Ginns, with 17 years at Jennison Associates, will serve as Chief Investment Officer. Together, they position Franklin Templeton to offer institutional-grade crypto products.
