Quantum Threats Loom Over Blockchain Security
Blockchain security is facing a growing threat from quantum technology, with Ethereum's layer 2 solutions potentially vulnerable to attacks.
Solana's co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has warned that these solutions may not be quantum-safe, but his own company has developed technology to withstand future threats. The Solana Foundation has outlined a step-by-step initiative to transition its network to post-quantum cryptography, demonstrating technical alignment on potential network transition strategies.
The use of elliptic curve cryptography in blockchains like Ethereum and Solana makes them vulnerable to quantum attacks. Critics argue that the economic design of Layer 2 solutions may weaken network effects and divert transaction revenue from the main layer. However, this is an industry-wide challenge, and blockchain developers are exploring post-quantum cryptography solutions.
