The Near Protocol is an innovative blockchain solution developed by former Microsoft and Google engineers Alexander Skidanov and Illia Polosukhin. Launched in 2020, the protocol utilizes a unique sharding mechanism called Nightshade to address scalability challenges.
Nightshade divides the network into multiple shards that process transactions in parallel, enabling the network to theoretically scale linearly with the number of shards. The protocol employs a dynamic resharding mechanism that adjusts the number of active shards based on network demand, distinguishing Near from static sharding implementations seen in other blockchain projects.
The Near Protocol also utilizes Doomslug, a block production mechanism that achieves practical finality within seconds. Validators are selected through a stake-weighted auction process, and validators with higher NEAR token stakes have proportionally greater chances of being chosen to produce blocks.
