Samourai Wallet Co-Founder Seeks Crypto Community's Help Amid $2M Debt
Keonne Rodriguez, co-founder of Samourai Wallet, has appealed to the cryptocurrency community for financial assistance after being left with a $2 million legal debt. The debt is a result of his defense against charges linked to the operation of a privacy-focused crypto mixer, which he was found guilty of operating an illegal money transmitting business.
Rodriguez and fellow co-founder William Lonergan Hill were sentenced to prison in November, with Rodriguez receiving a five-year sentence and Hill four years. The U.S. authorities had accused them of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business.
According to Lawful, criminal defense lawyers in the U.S. can charge between $200 and $500 per hour, with retainers for complex cases exceeding $10,000. The high costs have left Rodriguez financially exhausted, and he is now seeking public donations to cover the remaining expenses.
